Every year, hundreds of Belgian and Dutch students take on the challenge of creating a winning design for HEMA.

This year is the 23rd time that the HEMA Design Competition has been organised with the brief: design an authentic HEMA product, which makes it easier and more fun for people to get out and about. More than 280 creative ideas were submitted by young design talent, a selection of which can be seen in the display cases of Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam (Amsterdam Public Library). They include the ‘vrachtpatser’ by René Bijsterveld, which was awarded first prize by the jury, as well as the nominations for the public prize.
By staging the annual design competition, HEMA wants to contribute to the practical experience of students. Many up-and-coming talents have taken part in the competition in recent years – and the best designs became real HEMA heroes.
